I was walking around in my neighborhood, but the street layout was more like around my parents' neighborhood, further to the west and north, like around Remington and Edwards (?). I noticed one old house with weird windows in front. It was tall and green colored and appeared to have some windows boarded up over the front windows on the main level (which was quite a bit higher than a regular first floor). There were several stories on top of that, however, and the windows were not boarded up. The boarded windows were small. I realized that this house had an attic over the main floor, however the second and consecutive higher floors were above that attic. How odd, to have a weird little attic inbetween your main and second story! I walked around to an alley or side street where I could see this house from the back. I counted the stories...five total (I don't know if that was counting the weird attic or not). It was not an apartment building, but a regular old fashioned house with many stories. Although it looked like a frame house from the front, the back was built with stone or concrete. I wished I could see what it looked like inside.

Sounds like an interesting house - house of the soul in the underworld - is this an older house with levels?
Well, it had levels in the sense that it had about 5 stories, but not levels like staggered levels in more modern architecture.
Sometimes I wish I had a trilevel...isn't that awful? I wish you could've seen the one we lived in in NY...or even better, the one a friend had because it had five different levels as the "master suite" was on the very top. We weren't allowed to go up there, but we could look.
Our trilvel had a basement, which actually made it a quad level, but I guess that didn't count. My parents hated that house so much, but I loved it.
If Hieronymus fell down the stairs in a split level, he probably wouldn't have been hurt so badly.
that sounds like a cool house! I think I know what kind of houses you are referring to (the one you lived in as a kid). i remember these huge houses with lots of little rooms! I know some were turned into apartments ("flats") later on... what a shame. those old houses are really very cool.
Actually, that description sounds more like the house in my dream. The one I lived in for a couple years as a kid wasn't very big...maybe 1600 - 2000 square feet (although anything over 1600 square feet would be very appreciated by me now!). It was also fairly new, being built in the 50s.
Split levels (or tri-levels) have half-flights of stairs. If you come in to the living room from the front door, the main level usually has a living room, dining room and kitchen. You go up a half-flight to the bedrooms. You go down a half-flight from the main level to the garage level, which usually includes a family room/4th bedroom or half bath. That level is directly under the bedroom level. Down a half-flight from there is the basement, which is directly under the main level.
that is a big split level. most I have seen in MT are just a half basement and a main floor, with the garage on the ground level. So up 1/2 flight to the main part and down 1/2 flight to the basement from the garage entrance.
