Glacial Drumlin and Computer Problems--again

I decided I'd keep a journal of all the bike rides I take for future reference. I sort of neglected to do that for much of the recent part of the Glacial Drumlin.

Today we went from "Popp Rd" which is SE of Lake Mills (near Aztalan), across County Rd N, underneath State Hwy 26, then it paralleled 26 for a while until it ended @ West Junction Rd. just outside of Jefferson. It was 4.5 miles round trip. Although it shows that on the official map, it doesn't show it ending abruptly like that on Mapquest, so we were really confused. I guess you can get back to it by riding on Junction Rd. and then taking Y, but that's a lot of rutty country roads with not much curb and no bike lane. So we'll skip that part and pick it up, maybe next weekend, where it begins again on Y as it heads toward Helenville, where I've never been before.

I'm really tired, probably from the Claritin I took yesterday and the Lorazepam I took last night so I could sleep from the Claritin.

Stan takes his bike in to be repaired tomorrow, my desktop computer died so I have to take it in after he gets home, and Stan has a doctor's appointment on Wednesday, so we might not get much riding in early this week. My poor computer. I have no clue what happened. It's depressing.

I know 4 and 5 mile treks may seem miniscule to many reading this, but keep in mind that I *never* rode that much even when I was in my teens and 20s and rode every day and depended on my bike as my ONLY form of transportation (other than city busses in bad weather, and of course, walking). Back then in the prehistoric ages, there weren't such things as recreational bike paths, so one just used city streets. Before starting to ride a year ago, I hadn't ridden for approx. 18 years or so. I owned no bike during that time. So it will take me quite a while, at 47, to get up to speed, as low as that speed may be.

Unfortunately, I let them talk me into putting a shimano bicycle chain on my Univega fitted with suntour parts. The chain slipps especially in high gears and they insist it is the right part. I have a second opinion and a second chain to try at another shop. If this new chain doesn't slip I'll try to get a refund or store credit - we'll see. I told them 3 times when I took it in to the first place that I wanted to see another product and they insisted that this chain woudl work. Then when it didn't work I went back and asked again and they said the chain was right and that I needed to start replacing other parts. I don't know but this sounds like the old auto repair routine where you just keep buying part after part.

None of this comes close to the kind of misery that goes along with computer failure.

I don't criticize. My husband Pete and I recently sold our car and used those funds to buy bicycles. We made the switch about 2 months ago from never riding, to riding every day for every transportation purpose. At first, it was hard mentally, getting over the fear of being hit by a car, and then it was hard physically, particularly in the saddle. I re-learned the importance of stretching, very quickly.

We make a point of riding every day, whether we have somewhere to go or not, but some days, I don't feel like going more than a mile or two. We've gone as far as four miles from home, all city riding, and have yet to get out to a bike trail that would allow us to ride in safety for a longer distance, but I'm sure we would both like to. Before all this, I hadn't ridden a bicycle in at least 15 years.

Yup, my butt gets really sore. It might be because I injured my tail bone falling backwards in an office chair about 10 years ago. It bugs me on long car rides too.

I still have fear of cars hitting me, which is why I'm mostly doing bike paths/rec trails where there are no cars. My dad was hit by a car on his bike shortly before he retired. And I've been yelled at by idiot drivers just for being a biker not doing anything wrong, just riding along the side of the road, in the bike lane, but I guess not far enough over for their liking. So I definitely have a car paranoia, heck, I have a car paranoia even when I'm in a car. There are too many stupid drivers out there.

Congratulations to you Bran for going without a car. It's not something I could do (too much bulky stuff to haul too far away, too many pets that need vets, too cold in Wisconsin, etc), but I salute anyone who can.

Congratulations on exchanging a car for bicycles. I'm actually very emotionally attached to my bicycle and all of the bicycles I've had hold some of the best memories from any time of life. I think some of the worst part of my life was when my bicycle was in a box in the basement, but now it is out and I feel as happy or happier about life as I ever have.

My chain turns out to be good on my bicycle and the freewheel is actually worn, so the first bicycle shop did take good care of my situation after all. Now I'm getting a new freewheel and will probably be able to keep the new shimano chain too.

I stretch out every morning before I go to work and it is good to stretch before going to work on a bicycle or a bus. Much of my stretching is help my wrists as they are wearing out, but I stretch everything with a lot of time spent on the spine top to bottom.

I hope bicycling to work will be good for my health, and it is at least much more enjoyable than driving a car.
