These are old archived entries from my journal, Ornamental Illness. I have eliminated all graphics (except those in context of an entry) to save on my bandwidth usage.

12:20:2002 Entry: "Ann : Journal Blew Up"

Journal Blew Up

Something went kablooie. I don't know if it was something I did, but I know for a fact that my server was having problems yesterday, and as it was having these problems (that I didn't know about until it was too late), I tried to post. Said post didn't take, and it was downhill since then. I tried to install Movable Type, and the installation went fine, but when I looked at the templates and saw everything was in xml instead of old fashion html, well, that scared me off. I thought, "Hey, life's too short. Why not just go back to Blogger?" Then I looked at all the little square day and month graphics I created back when I first started this site in the middle of December, most of which I won't get to use now if I change from my Greymatter template. So I thought I'd just re-install Greymatter (in a different location) and keep everything the way it was. That'd save me a lot of work, and well, life's just too short to make yet another web template for myself. Plus, I have Photoshop 7 to research!

All the old archived entries are still there (look to the right), it's just that the comments have been disabled on all entries before today.

Heck, life's too short to write all this techie drivel, but I thought I did owe some explanation of what happened and why certain things have changed.

Welcome back! I'd already begun missing you!

I do moveable type in good ol html. I basically deleted all the style sheet or xml stuff. So if you ever do want to try mt drop me a line I'll happily help out. Though I must admit I'm not a mt guru yet. There's still a few layout aspects I hate and haven't figured out how to fix yet.

Love the new splash page, although it's loading slowly for me right now. Might be on my end, though...my ISP sucks. (It's supposed to be cable access, but I rarely get real speed. *sigh*)

Have you seen any monarch butterflies yet? They are on the way...I've been seeing them for about three weeks now. Think of it...you'll have butterfly great-grandchildren this year. :-)

Have a great day!

Hope you get a good night's sleep tonight, Nico!

Thanks for the offer, Leann. I think I'll just stick with this Greymatter for now. If it ever blows up again, I'll just re-install it...the most I could lose is time and the ability to add more comments.

Kim, I probably won't see them until July, although it did feel like July last week (it's March again today, though). And I doubt it's your ISP...it's my server. It's been extremely slow lately. I put in a complaint ticket to Aletia. ;-)

Yay! You're back! Did you also know that "stressed" is "desserts" spelt backwards? Hubby told me this afternoon. I think he's trying to tell me something... like not to snack too much... but I don't understand that language.

Yep, I slept very good, knowing my daily blog-reading-in-the-morning would be in order today ;o]
The speed on your server is much much better today b.t.w.

YEAH!!! Ann is back!!!! :o)

My link has changed now, and I have an MT blog! Let me tell you, the templates freaked me out too!! Luckily I had tons of help, and I think I have it down now. I couldn't believe how many files there were with MT in comparison to GM!! Sheesh!

My new address is: Dayzed And Confuzed

I know you are busy, but drop by if you get a chance!

SO glad you are back!!!!! :o))

Jane...I was feeling very stressed with this journal fiasco...must explain why I ate an entire bag of healthfoodstore cheese puffs. Not that that is dessert, exactly, but...

Nico, I think they might have fixed it, although it seems to be blipping off and on, server-wise.

Maria, congratulations!

Happy that you've come back--Blogger, MT, GM--whatever it takes! I have MT and I'm still using Blogger. I think a lot of people are intimidated by the MT templates. :-)

Posted by ali @ 04:23:2002:12:08 PM CST

MT templates did my head in the first time I tried to set anything up. I had only just worked out how all the bits of GM fitted together and found it difficult to make the switch. Now I'm used to it I can put up a new layout in a couple of hours. I actually find GM very fragmented now in comparison to MT and wild horses wouldn't make me switch back. I don't use XML either. I do a basic html layout in dreamweaver and then paste in the journal codes I normally use.

I'm happy you didn't go to blogger, everysince I got on greymatter, I'd never go back to blogger.

Posted by Anita @ 04:23:2002:04:10 PM CST

Ali, I agree...whatever it takes. It's not the software that makes the journal, IMHO. The software you use should be your choice, whichever you are the most comfortable with.

I'm still seriously considering using blogger for certain things where I'm not anticipating using comments. Plus it's soooo simple. Now, had I been using blogger for this journal, all the data would've been stored on blogger's server and this problem I had over the weekend with my server having gas pains wouldn't have affected it at all...
