12:20:2002 Entry: "Ann : Another temporary diary"

Another temporary diary

Again, I had started my journal offline because of the server move. Too technical to discuss, but I want to make sure that everything is in place before I add another entry.

8.16.02

I'm sick of pictures of generic people on websites that aren't the people involved in running the website or business. I've been doing a lot of looking around at hosts lately, and most all hosting sites have stock photos of people that you just KNOW aren't the employees or owners of the company. Maybe some people are fooled. Maybe some people see an attractive woman on the site and think, "hey, she'll talk to me for customer support." Maybe some people see an authoritative bussinessy man on the site and think, "hey, he's running things...he knows what's going on." But no. It's all a lie. I'm not fooled. Why bother putting people on the site unless it is you? I'd rather see a picture of a 250-lb bald guy with a goatee and little nerd glasses eating a cheeseburger sitting behind a computer, because *that* would probably be total truth in advertising, not to mention they'd have a little sense of humour too. I'd rather see just a generic picture of a stupid server (just so that it makes contextual sense for a hosting site...a modem for a dialup ISP, whatever), or just a decent layout and design. Leave the models at home--they give me the creeps! They don't mean anything! It's not a picture of you or your staff or your family or your facility or your customers. It's completely meaningless and feelgood stupid. Are we supposed to think, "Oh, phew, the site is run by humans instead of flesheating mindcontrol robots from Cybervania"? Don't you think Cybervania's flesheating mindcontrol robots would obviously conspicuously have lots of nicely generic humans on their site just so that you won't be suspicious?

Oh, and it's not just business sites. What about the personal sites that have pictures of models. Like *that* is the person behind the site. Yeah, right.

Hey, folks, that's me up there. Psychedelicized, but me nonetheless.

8.18.02 - DREAM - Roxy Disco

Stan and I were in some public place like a theatre, when we hear Roxy Music's "A Song for Europe" come over the loud speakers. In disbelief, we start singing the words (I don't even know the words very well, but somehow in the dream, we were able to sing them), except it suddenly turns into a disco beat and we start to do our gagging/cringing Ann and Stan are grossed out now routine. We realize it is not Roxy Music, but a band doing a Roxy cover. Then I start to do a teenager at American Bandstand impression, saying, "It has good lyrics and a good melody, but you can't really dance to it" implying that's what the cover band wanted to remedy when they redid this song.

The funny thing is, IRL when I woke up, I told Stan the dream. He told me I was lucky to dream about a Roxy song because he was having a nightmare that we were in Fort Collins and he was hearing Donna Summer's "Bad Girls." I laughed that he would have such a song in his dream, but found it funny and ironic because of the disco-ified Roxy, and I wonder if I was dreaming about that about the time Stan was dreaming about the Donna Summer song...like maybe our dreams crossed paths or something.

If advertising was honest I think the world would look totally different and far less stuff would be bought. I mean, who would want to buy an anti-wrinkle cream from a woman who was actually in the age where such cream was "needed"? ;)
