12:20:2003 Entry: "Ann : This leaves me with a very odd feeling"

This leaves me with a very odd feeling

Taken from a BBC website: "In music, Dave Gilmour, lead guitarist of Pink Floyd, gets a CBE. He recently donated £3.6 million from the sale of his mansion to a project providing housing for the homeless." OK, a part of me is happy...

breakdown:
Grand Cross GBE
Knight/Dame KBE/DBE (Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney were both knighted)
Companion/Commander CBE
Officer OBE
Member MBE (this is what the Beatles got in 1966...John gave his back, didn't he?)

...afterall, it's someone from Pink Floyd receiving an archaic British Order! Yet, at the same time, I'm thinking it was sort of *bought* in a way, what with the donation. Maybe I'm just a tad disappointed because it wasn't Roger Waters, who has been donating a large part of his earnings for a very long time, but not in one fell swoop with massive media attention like Gilmour did. And granted, Roger might have pulled a Lennon, but I doubt it, after all, he is older now and when Lennon did that he was in his 20s. I don't know...it's hard to say. Somewhere I read last year when Jagger was knighted, it caused quite a rift between him and Keith Richards. Jagger said something like (very paraphrased) "Keith shouldn't be jealous beause he would've refused it anyway." Well, it's not as if this will cause a rift between David and Roger...heh heh heh.

I don't know what to say...it's just a strange feeling. I feel like I've been through this before, myself, personally, but differently. It's like working really hard in college for its own reward, and then having some scholarship or TA pass you by because Terry Mattheson sucked up to the profs. (Or like my episode with the Section 8 Nazi from college not wanting my work in his gallery while he takes on less challenging art) Not equating Gilmour with Mattheson, of course, I mean Gilmour has amazing talent as a guitarist. But maybe that's it...Terry Mattheson (in all his/her incarnations) had talent, but that's all it was.

Am I way off course, Stan, or should I be shot for saying such blasphemous things?

Why do I feel sad? Shouldn't I be happy?
