12:20:2003 Entry: "Stan : The year of the rise of the Berlin Wall"

The year of the rise of the Berlin Wall

On my way home from work I stopped at my favorite natural foods store to pick up a few supplies. While I was waiting for my total the petite young clerk told me she needed to see my ID. At first I thought to myself that, 'I'm old enough to buy coffee,' but then I remembered that I had a bottle of Italian wine in my basket too.

To me my clerk looked to be young enough to be my youngest daughter - if I had any human children. I handed her my drivers license and she examined it and also looked at me carefully too. I told her that, "It was the year the Berlin Wall was built." She said, "What." I said, referring to the birth date on my license, that it was the year that the Berlin Wall was built. She apologized that she didn't know history very well.

I thanked her for carding me and being checked, of course, made me feel very young. While I was leaving the store I heard her seeking sympathy from another clerk and complaining that she was having a bad day. I didn't want her to feel bad about carding me, because I took it as a complement.
