02:24:2005 Entry: "Ann : Everything I see online lately pisses me off."

Everything I see online lately pisses me off.

First of all, I'm trying to find some current prices on metal leaf. I'm met with obstacles of outdated websites of leaf suppliers that offer no online ordering, lame-as-hell sites that take forever to load with no information, poor design, or that simply do not exist. I'm not talking about the small-time craft suppliers that sell 6 sheets of leaf for $10. I want wholesale. Nada. The company I used to order from in the 90s wants to fax the info to me. They want me to fax them a product list request on my letterhead. Can we say GET OUT OF THE 80'S ALREADY! I hate the fax culture because it seems that those who use faxes and only faxes are so STUCK. They cannot go digital, they are clueless about websites and email and online commerce, but by the same token they think they're too good for the old tried and true snail mail method. Well, those are my methods. Faxes are dead, man. You have a printed catalog that you don't want to snail mail? Get a website and make it a pdf. Fax is shit.

So I'm trying various websites domain names just to see if they work and if they might happen to lead me to something, and I come across silverleaf dot com, in hopes that maybe I'll find a secret metal leaf supplier. No, I'm not providing a link. I'm met with a cactus. Well, that's nice. But then I read the site. It's a private golf club community in the south west. OK. Then a little flash slide show starts to load. And I am sickened. They DARE use a cactus image on their site, yet look what they have done to the Arizona countryside...they have raped it with their non-native and inappropriate-for-a-desert green grass. The pictures are so bizarre...beautiful Arizona desert with Saguaros, and in the middle of it, an unnatural green carpet dimpled with fake blue pools. Sickening.

I better stop surfing for a while.

Oh, and one more thing. My sitemeter has a stupid Circuit City banner ad on it that says "Playing Pink on a Pink Floyd Computer?"* Screw you, Circuit City, you've just quadrupled my reasons to NEVER EVER set foot in your snooty nerdstore again.

*I had to think about that for a while, but I think it means "are you playing contemporary (crap) music on an outdated computer system?" Which is really riduculous because if you think about it, didn't Pink Floyd have some of the best soundsystems around for their concerts? And who even hears about Pink anymore anyway? Whearas Pink Floyd is timeless. Some shorn head 22 year old that wears his pants below his butt probably devised that ad campaign.

I better stop before my blood pressure goes through the roof.

One hundred years from now now one will know what 'Pink' music is and one thousand years from now no one will even know that 'Pink' music ever existed. However, Pink Floyd will be at the very least an important part of the history of music, but 'Pink' music people don't care about that they only care about where the next hot crotch they can find to get their rocks off in. Oh well, how borring is that?

I guess our generation is showing.

Young people might say that we're old and out of touch, but I'm happy with the music I love.

Posted by Stan @ 01:22:2005:11:36 AM CST

I don't understand anything, which is not new, and I sure don't know what pink music is, I only assosiate pink with gay ;) Anyway, aside from subject: As far as I remember (all though the huge cartoon p*ssy is what I remember best), Pink was the name of the psychedelic minded maincharacter in The Wall, or? Have you watched that movie?

Posted by Nico @ 01:24:2005:09:47 AM CST

Yes, I've watched The Wall many times! No, this Pink is not the character in The Wall.

Posted by Ann @ 01:24:2005:10:00 AM CST

No, I know it's the female artist Pink in this context - and I finally understood that the meaning of the question is whether "your" computer is old or not, as Pink Floyd was big in the 70s and 80s. I've never understood the borders between generations though, how many years is it actually between the generations? 10-20?

Posted by Nico @ 01:25:2005:08:52 AM CST

I was never able to understand just why those who were in charge of designating what generation is what, made the year span so darn small. I mean, my parents, Stan's parents, there's all 30+ years difference between their ages and their children's. But that's not a generation, even though technically (geneologically) it is, but culturally, it's like a generation and a half. Or even two generations, the way they are sometimes defined. And the people who I know who have kids either had kids in their 30s when they were "settled" or they had kids when they were too young, i.e., before 20. Seems like no one has kids in their 20s these days like they did in the previous eras.

I guess the cultural generation is different than the biological one, and maybe my mistake is linking them too closely.

10 Years ago I felt more in tune with Generation X, and now I'm "feeling my age" more like a Baby Boomer. I was born in 61 so I'm sort of stuck between both generations.

Posted by Ann @ 01:25:2005:10:26 AM CST

It makes sense (the generation-thing), cause I kind of figure we're different generations, but you are not old enough to be my parents (I'm free for adoption though ;). I also guess there has been many generation X, I'm pretty sure I belonged to one of them, at least there was a generation X thing back in the 90s in the Nirvana and Pearl Jam days when people at my age were "young".

Posted by Nico @ 01:27:2005:07:46 AM CST

You know what's weird, is that I've noticed over the course of the years is that Generation X kept getting moved ahead. I swear, back in the 80s, when I was in my 20s, people were just starting to talk about the Generation X and how people my age were a part of it. I think they had it starting at the birth of the 60s (pre-JFK)...or even slightly before--the chronological 60s, not the cultural 60s (Beatles emmergence, circa 1964), which is where the majority of the dates now seem to start. Now, I've even heard it as starting in 1967 or some very late year. I don't know who keeps pushing it ahead (or is it pushing it back? I can't ever get that straight), but it sure seems like those who are in charge of Generational History keeps rewriting the book to adapt to their own agenda.

Also, people with older brothers and sisters are more likely to feel closer to *their* generation, and those with younger siblings visa vera. (and those of us without...? alienated altogether) It's all very mutable and to set any specific yet arbitrary dividing line and say "You're a baby boomer" and "you're gen X" is pretty naive because it all flows, one into another.

So, you're looking to be adopted, huh? ;-)

Posted by Ann @ 01:27:2005:09:47 AM CST

OK, here's an example of the "pushed ahead" thing about Generation X. Why would Billy Idol (who was born when....55? 57? or something?) form a band of like-aged dudes named Generation X if they were a bunch of boomers? See, back in the 70s, they probably WERE considered to be part of Generation X. Heh.

Here's an interesting link.

And another one, even though it's ugly on the eyes. They make a good point though about all the permutations of years...it's all so arbitrary.

Posted by Ann @ 01:27:2005:09:54 AM CST

I've always been thinking about generation x as a therm used on generations from the 70s and out because it's very difficult to label them based on what they do, how they look, etc, as people from the mid 70s and out started to look and behave very differently. In the 50s and 60s, and before that, people were very equal in the way they looked and lived (in the US and Europe). It was easy to target them as they, if they didn't like the same and have the same needs, at least pretended that they did.

Posted by Nico @ 01:28:2005:07:58 AM CST

i've been confused over the generation labels, as well. i was born in '77--i feel like i missed out on the cultural events/references that many "Gen X" people talk about. (television shows, movies, political events, etc.) it just didn't seem right that i should be lumped in with this 'Generation X'. i even missed Nirvana--Cobain was long dead by the time i became musically conscious. this from the site Ann linked to (the one that is ugly on the eyes) sets things straight for me:

"Then what's the 1976-81 crowd called? "Generation Y" comes to mind. (Or is that,"Why?") Also known as the "Baby Boomlet", because birthrates went up again in those years, what the media often mis-names "Gen-X" are the "grunge" kids that would be as alien to a high school campus in 1985 as we would have been in at high school in the 1970s."

Posted by bran @ 02:13:2005:07:49 PM CST

You missed Nirvana in high school Bran? I would've liked to been that age then, actually. I felt really old when I got into them. Heh. But sometimes I know in my case I just don't pick up on things at the right time and then I kick myself years later for not doing so.
