I find it all very disturbing

All Dead Pope, All The Time; 24-Hour Catholic-TV news channels

15-hour wait for millions to file past an unembalmed corpse.

This is the world of my dad, live on TV. I never thought I'd see it happen. When I was young, I thought the world would get progressively more and more liberal to the point I'd feel like an old fogey. Now I feel like an old fogey because the world got progressively (or regressively as the case may be) more and more conservative. Reactionary is in. It's hip to be a churchmouse. Whatever happened to the ideals of the 60s and 70s? Whatever happened to people thinking for themselves and not having to be told what to think? Now do they not only want to make banning gay marriage an Amendment, they want to ban all civil unions as well!

Something went wrong at some point in time. I'm not sure what it was, but I hope someone can fix it again.

There are always people who want to legislate their version of scriptures. There versions are always wrong and they ignore 99% of what they read and focus on a few lines which they don't really understand.

However, it would be nice if these so called Catholics would oppose the war as the Pope did, but once again they are selective on about what matters. I bet 99 % of all Catholics in the United States don't even know that the Pope opposed the war.

They are more interested in walking past a smelly corpse than being spiritual anyway. They deserve to be ignored, and maybe I should start now...

i like to mumble the old adage to myself, "this too shall pass."

of course, i find myself mumbling a lot.

The pope was a *. Won't miss him. Maybe we can finally send some condoms to Africa now and at least try to slow down the spreading of hiv instead of praying.

Very true words, you guys.

The only things I agreed with him on was being against the war and being against the death penalty (murderers should be kept alive not just so they can live with what they had done, but so that scientists can study them...at least that's my take on it) but everything else, no. But you know what? That's the way it is with a lot of people...you agree on some things and disagree with most else. Popes, holy people, presidents, prime ministers, artists, writers, musicians, they're all just people and it's ridiculous such a media circus is being made of all of this over a dead man who people knew his time was coming for a loooong time. It's not like this was a big surprise, taken down in the prime of his life. Then I can see why people would be saddened.

I would like to hope that an institution that (unfortunately, IMHO) has such an influence on so many people in developing countries could have a progressive policy in place that supports birth control and supports women in influential positions (I read somewhere that had this pope treated blacks the way he treated women, he'd be labelled racist), but, unfortunately, with the trend toward conservativism now, I fear they'll put in an old school Italian pope that toes the line.

Of course people have the choice, they have the choice to make their own decisions, but saying that in this journal is sort of like preaching to the choir (unless there are some masochists out there that read this journal because they hate my ideas, and I wouldn't put that past anyone). I just wish the rest of the world could decide to think for themselves.

I think my last paragraph came out kinda funky: What I mean above is that "I wouldn't put it past anyone to stalk this journal (or anyone's journal) because they HATE them", not "I wouldn't put it past anyone to hate my ideas." Of course people have the right to hate my ideas! And then it's time to move on to a different journal.

Hope I'm making myself clear. It's real early and I didn't get myself much sleep...I'll write about it later.

"I read somewhere that had this pope treated blacks the way he treated women, he'd be labelled racist"

This is often the case, religion excuse and legalize discrimination and suppression of women. The Bible should be used with much caution. Like Simone de Beauvoir said: Legislators, priests, philosophers, writers, and scientists have striven to show that the
subordinate position of woman is willed in heaven and advantageous on earth. The religions
invented by men reflect this wish for domination.
