Sparrows
While sitting here at my computer, I've noticed that in the past couple days sparrows land on the neighbor's sloping roof outside with large chunks in their mouths. I couldn't tell what it was at first; it looked like tree bark. But today something else is happening. They land on the roof, then fly up to side of the neighbor's house where they have a vent for the bathroom. The birds flutter around the vent, frustrated, and then fly away or land on the sloping roof again. I looked to see what was going on, and apparently they can't get into the vent. I'm guessing they have babies in there, and at one time the vent was open, which allowed them access, and now it is closed. What's even sadder, is that I am seeing that the chunks of stuff in the birds mouths are Cicadas, one of my favorite insects. So now the Cicadas are going to waste, the bird parents are frustrated, and their young are starving to death. I hope the neighbors turn their fan on, if that is what opens the vent. I don't know if I can stand to watch this.

Have you tried contacting the neighbors? Poor little birdies!

Sparrow update: Well, I saw a sparrow fly *out* of the vent. I don't know if it was a baby or an adult...hard to tell. Then I saw what looked to be a sparrow hanging on to the vent and maybe feeding the young inside. I'm hoping they can access it now anyway. I'd feel really embarrassed talking to the neighbors, "Um, can you turn your bathroom vent on?" They'd probably think I'm a kook!

Cicadas are very cute and it is sad to see birds taking them for food, but most of them are basicly - food for birds. I've seen lots of different birds with cicadas like robins, and crows too.
