09:07:2005 Entry: "Ann : August 9th"

August 9th

I woke up early this morning when Stan's alarm rang. I turned on the BBC on the radio to hear the news. Discovery's landing in Florida was called off, pushed back a couple of hours to California. I fell back in and out of sleep with the radio on. I fell into a dream. I can't really explain the plot of the dream, there was someone we used to know, _o_, and he was being very difficult. There was also a woman who I have no idea who she was...tall, thin, straight medium-length blonde hair...sort of average in a way, but beautiful by today's standards. She was involved with a man who was beneath her, but it was because she was some kind of criminal. Was it _o_ that she was involved with? I don't now. I had a very strange large stone jasper pendant. For some reason, this pendant related to Dehydrated Floyd's last album, but I don't understand what the relationship was. The pendant was too large to wear, so I wanted to make it into a computer mouse, but didn't know how to. There was food, hors d'oeurves (sp?) in the dream. I was talking about the pendant mouse in front of _o___, but he didn't say anything about Pink Floyd as I thought he would (teasing me about them). Then the radio started to come through. It was the news reporting on Discovery entering the atmosphere. Then the dream changed. I was looking out the window and saw all these planes flying around in the sky, not passenger jets, but fighter planes, military-looking planes, but some planes without wings, just long tubes like rockets, but they were flying. It was rather sinister. The sky was a dark turquoise/cerulean. I heard real life come through in the dream, the radio spoke, "it looks like a bright star in the sky." I took this as my cue to wake up and go put on the tv.

As I watched tv, I felt nauseous, like I could lose it any minute. It could've been my birth control pill adjustment, or it could've been the fear of something horrible happening. Fortunately, it couldn't have been a better landing. I am so relieved, as I was so fearful of this entire shuttle mission.

---

Yesterday as I took Lucifer Sam outside, I noticed his fur was a bit "bumpy" and not as smooth as it used to be. Could it have curled after giving him a bath the other day? After he came inside, I felt one of the bumps, and saw a lump on his skin. Immediately I panicked...crap, my dog has skin cancer. Then I realized his entire back was filled with lumps. I examined one closely. Looked sort of pimply/mosquito bite-ish. Maybe it wasn't skin cancer, but I still feared it was some kind of disease. Maybe it was mange. Maybe it was an allergic reaction to something. Could he have picked this up at the dog park we took him to on Saturday (a Madison Pug get-together)? Whatever, I debated calling the vet, and decided to wait until Stan came home.

I showed his condition to Stan immediately, still worried my dog had some horrible disease. "They look like bites," said Stan. "Looks like he has fleas."

Fleas! Of course! We took him to the dog park without a flea collar! We never go to dog parks except when there's a pug event, so we are not in the habit of flea prevention. Our animals have never had fleas, as they are indoor animals. All baby puppies or kitties we have adopted have gotten a flea bath immediately. Never a flea problem...except...

20 years ago! Exactly 20 years ago! We were living in a rental (a sad, sad, rental, a sad, sad time) in Fort Collins. And we didn't have any cats or dogs, just caged rats. No, the fleas didn't even come from our house. They came from my parent's cats! My parents did let their cats go outside (something we stopped doing ourselves in the late 80s) and the cats slept in the basement. That summer, I was helping my mom clear out a room in the basement. That's where we must've picked up the fleas. We had to powder our rats with cat flea powder. We even put flea powder down by our feet on our futon. It was very uncomfortable. And that was the one and only time we had a flea problem. Until now.

We gave him a Frontline treatment that we got as part of a puppy kit when we got him. We then bought a couple collars, one that we put on Plato, and another to use on Sam when we take him to Pug get-togethers in the future. We bought flea powder for the cats (they've never worn collars and I don't think they could adapt). So hopefully we can lick this problem.

But I'm glad it's only fleas. Fleas I can deal with. A horrible disease, I couldn't.

Oh, and here's a corpse.
