10:01:2005 Entry: "Ann : The Trial"

The Trial

Sometimes you get swept up in a current not of your own choosing. Today was one of those days. I accidently got caught in a whirlpool of no escape. It was one of my Colorado nightmares. I ended up at "Spud Days" in Carbondale. "Spud Days" is a celebration of Carbondale's rich culture of potato harvesting. Add to it a crowd of people, longhaired fancy mountain dudes on trust funds, and a Skynyrd/Johnny Cash/Whatever-sorta-rocks-in-a-kinda-westernish-way cover band, and, well, you get the picture. I suppose if I was a Colarada chick with tight jeans and feathered hair that would've been really cool in 1978 and it's so 70s that's it's almost really cool now because of the ironic retroness, I would'a really dug the event. I would'a got myself some beer, food, held up a lighter (even though it was high noon) and yelled "Play Freebird! Freebird!" at the cover band. I woulda really dug the fancy man that was an almost-Carl/some distant Carl relative that was so thin he looked like he'd snap in two.

But I'm not that way. And even when I was the closest to being that way (not that I ever was that way, mind you, but there was a time when I was much closer), I still would not have felt good about being there. Not only that, it was just a big crowd of people out in the sun. I'd rather be alone in a dark cemetary. I mean there were kids at booths painting potatoes. What the hell was that? I completely avoid stuff like that in Wisconsin, so why was I at this event in Colorado? And come to think of it, Carl would rather be alone too. That's all part of being Carl. Stan and I actually leave town when our neighborhood holds their yearly Atwoodfest. So if I can't even walk down the block for that, why am I at a Fest a thousand miles away? How the hell did this happen?

Me: We're going where?
Host: Down there.
Me: With all the people?
Host: Yes
Me: (horrified) Oh... (looking at Stan and speaking with my eyes) GET...ME...OUT...OF...HERE

But maybe it was all worth it, not just for the pretty Sandstone Egg that Stan got me at one of the booths (not the booth where the kids were spud-paintin'), but to witness the Nightmare in Action...to hear the cover band burst into "Sweet Home Alabama" right as I was walking by was a thousand laughs, and to see FancyCarl strut by to the accompaniment of some generic-y Eagles-ish tune was worth a million more.

That was my Colorado nightmare. Stan had one earlier in the day, his own personal Colorado nightmare. It had to do with some semblance of a church camp and hayrides. And there are many more Colorado nightmares...those are just a few.

Some day I will explain Carl. I've been meaning to get to that. Most importantly, Carl comes in many varieties, like flora and fauna native to certain regions. There's most importantly, THE Carl, Colorado Carl, who has evolved throughout the decades. But there's probably a Carl for every state. There's a Wisconsin Carl, a Michigan Carl, and they're different from Arizona Carl or Maine Carl. This variety was a pseudoCarl, a real fancyman. MY Carl, the Original Carl, is hardly fancy, which is the essence of his Carlness.

How can you tell if somebody has a trust fund?

He was a real dandy, that one was... a real fancy boy out looking for some attention of the bedroom variety. Walking along with his head held high and his pony tail wisping in the wind from under his black cowboy hat. Yes, a real site to see - that one was.

A real sight to see ...

Someday all corrections will be considered literary works of art.

In the meantime, they're just nitpicking.

Here is a comment on an old entry "Ow, My Eyes" or something like that. I don't understand the dates - it's either 3/9/05 or 2/22/05 - if you're interested in what the following refers to.

I can fully understand your annoyance at the TV in your breakroom. TV's and radios shouldn't even be in breakrooms because it's (virtually) impossible to have a station/channel on, and at a volume, that everyone can agree to. Many years ago I worked at a place where one woman wanted to watch Family Fued during break time. She'd turn on the TV as soon as she got in the room and it would just blat annoying over all the people talking. She would never even look at it! So once I dared to turn off the TV. Instantly she noticed - she whirled around in her chair and says (over the din) "I was watching that!!!" So of course, I turned it back on. When she went on vacation no one turned on the TV

I have heard of this product and think it sounds brilliant. I'd like to get one for my co-workers radio ...

As Lou Reed said, "you should have two radios in case one breaks." Of course that was back when radio was better. Remember?

Posted by Andrea @ 10:07:2005:05:24 PM CST

I rarely listen to the radio or music any more. But you're right - it was better more than a quarter of a century ago. When I am (practically) forced to, I listen to a "classic rock" station that plays the music that I listened to in high school, most of which I still like. My best friend in high school (boy does that seem like a long time ago!) was "Andrea" (which I had forgotten off the face of the earth) and she was very into music and heavily influenced my tastes.

For the most part I would rather just listen to the peace and quiet, but I have 3 Neil Young CDs which I listen to occasionnally. (Harvest, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and After the Goldrush.) I particularly like that song that starts out something about buying a pickup and going down to LA.

Anyway, enuf of this. I am hunt and pecking on an ergonomic keyboard and this is taking me forever to do, but its been fun communicating with you again Ann, so worth the effort.

Before I post this I would like to recommend a song to you, since you recommended so many to me in the past: BB King's "To Know You Is to Love You". The version I am familiar with is from The Best of BB King and I loved this song the very first time I ever heard it.

Take care and best wishes to you and Stan and all the cats and dogs!

Thanks! Great to hear you are listening to music again.
