We all went outside to some strange park. Everyone sat in cliques and groups, but I sat by myself on some really hard, uncomfortable chair. Someone was passing around a picture of antique typesetting equipment, and I spotted a piece that I "actually" (in dream logic, not IRL) used. The only way I can describe it is it sort of looked like a cross between a 1930s typewriter and that hideous monster of cold war technology, the keypunch machine and sorter that I used at CSU (I'm not THAT old, it's just that the Chem Stockroom was that outdated...hmmm...maybe that's why they hired my dad). Then we all started watching some movie that was projected into the air. I'm not sure if it was a hologram because I don't know how they work, but if you project something from a regular projector, the image will be projected on the closest object, but this projected it onto a vertical plane, so the projection created an artificial "screen." I can't remember the content of the movie, it might have been just MandleAcid psychedelia. It was Halloween and I was at someone's house, but I'm not sure who's. It sort of had a split-level quality like Lamya and Russ's, but it wasn't them, except for the fact there were kids there. The house seemed familiar nonetheless. The staircases were too high for a split level, though, and rickety iron bars, that were coming loose from the floor, were the only thing that stood between a top floor and the stairs. I felt this was unsafe. Lucifer Sam was there, and he was walking around the stairways. I was so afraid he would stumble and fall, not just down a flight of stairs like Hieronymus did, but literally down a stairwell, which would kill him (I hope I've differentiated the two...the former is when you fall down stairs, bump, bump, bump, the latter is when you fall in the cavity). I decided to leave the building. I remember seeing a bunch of women in their 20s with blonde early 60s wigs. I thought it was odd, but then remembered it was Halloween. I started walking down Main Street, our first street in Madison, towards our rental. Lucifer Sam was with me. Then I crossed over to where the train tracks and gardens were, and LS started running in front of cars. It freaked me out. Lucifer Sam looked different--he was longer, lower to the ground, and his fur was light green and mop-like, sort of like Dave and Suzy's late dogs (Peke? Shitzu? Lhasa?). I then sat on the ground and held him, glad that he wasn't run over. Then there were people with other dogs around me. One was a Rottweiller mix, who seemed like a really friendly dog, but someone told me that he might have to be put down because he bit a policeman.
12 Comments I need to quit reading your stuff - it's addictive. And funny. I rarely remember my dreams, but you pop up in them a couple times a year probably. The only one I remember you were wearing cut off shorts and a cute white camesole style blouse with white eyelite (spelling?) lace and you were just as cute as a button. You had a dark tan which the white blouse showed off and you were slim as a reed - just like in HS. I was jealous of the way you looked (just like in HS!). But we were both adults. Posted by greenthumb @ 10:20:2005:12:01 PM CST Are you sure that was me in the dream? I'm virtually tan-less and never wear white. And I only wish I was slim again! Of course there's no such thing as a light green colored dog, either. Posted by Ann @ 10:20:2005:12:37 PM CST Yes, it was you. It's just as well that you don't have a tan - now that we are all so much more informed about skin cancer. If you had the same figure now that you had in your teens you'd be one in a million. Actually I still do. I was heavy then and I'm heavy now! But it's even worse with gravity, broken capillaries, etc. (yuk! this is getting ugly). Dogs can take over your life - my sister has 3 dogs (don't ask - dogs just seem to happen) and 3 cats and she says her life seems to revolve around dog walks, food, vacuuming dog hair, trying to give everyone attention, scooping the yard, paying for dog food etc. The dogs are walked every day - they aren't just tossed out in the back yard - they are members on the family (like yours). The dogs are Duke (I usually call him The Duke) and he is a pitbull/boxer mix; LeRoy (a large stupid but loyal dog who looks much more intelligent than he is) and Sabrina (called Beanie) who is a Chauhauhua (sp?) and is just the sweetest dog in the world (along with all the other dogs who someone claims is the sweetest in the world). Chauhauhue dogs have a bad rap - she is a wonderful dog and can go on 11-12 mile hikes in the mtns unfazed. All the dogs came pre-named - thus no exotic names like yours (Greek mythology?). The cats are Newyt, Ash & Ripley. Guess the inspiration for their names. Obviously the pets are another subject I could go on and on about ... I'm sure some nut has dyed their dog green for St. Patty's Day. Posted by greenthumb @ 10:20:2005:12:58 PM CST I couldn't live without my pets. We decided that two of each is a pretty good balance...we had as many as 5 at once (3 cats, 2 dogs) and that was just too much at a time. As far as names, our old, late cats were given Russian names, Vladimir was named so because of Natasha, and she was named that because we got an Iguana we named Boris. We named our late Pug Hieronymus after the Dutch Renaissance painter, Hieronymus Bosch. That was our Art Dog. Persephone is our only animal actually named after Greek Mythology, the Goddess Persephone who went to visit Pluto in the winter. Plato is named after the Ancient Greek Philospher because Stan was taking a lot of Philosophy in grad school at the time. He's our Philosophy Dog. Caligula was named after Caligula the most cruel and ruthless Roman Caesar. We named him so because Caligula literally means "little boots" and that's what our cat has...four white ones. If you want the sweetest creampuff of an animal, name him something associated with evil. Which brings us to Lucifer Sam, which is named after an early Pink Floyd song, actually about a cat, but I wanted something Floydian and it seemed to fit him. He's our Music Dog. Do you have animals? Posted by Ann @ 10:20:2005:01:26 PM CST I do not personally own any animals. With all the dog walking I do with my sister, that pretty much takes care of my animal needs (!?!). I always find it interesting to hear the inspiration of names - whether it be animal or people names. Years ago I named some of my parent's cats - I got all the names from the dictionary: Acteaon, Athena, Adhara and Artemis. Obviously, I never got past the "A"s. I also named their pug Xerxes but they always call him Zerkie which is basically the phonetic version. No one can pronounce a name with 2 Xs without a dictionary to help. Xerxes is an example of what happens when a living being has experienced nothing but unconditional, undying, devoted love their entire life. Xerxes's life is devoted to sleeping on the sofa and most importantly eating and begging for food. I think that a Pug thing. Posted by greenthumb @ 10:20:2005:01:46 PM CST Pugs are great! Ann's dream was a little too close to waking life today. We put the dogs in the car while the heating people came to give us estimates on a new heating system. When we went to get the dogs back from the car Lucifer Sam jumped out and got away from us for a few seconds. Then after we had him on a leash he ran over the edge of a retaining wall in the back yard. I wasn't sure if he was going to fall out of his collar or hurt his neck hanging over the edge. I grabed him and pulled him back up before he fell or hurt himself, but it was a close one. The pug was just too excited and running around like he was going to fly. This seemed a little too close to Ann's dream about with a falling dog image. Posted by Stan @ 10:20:2005:02:17 PM CST Waaaayyyyy too close to the dream. Damn. I've gotta stop having those foreshadowing psychic dreams. I hate them. Posted by Ann @ 10:20:2005:03:24 PM CST When dogs get excited they really can race around in circles - oblivious to their owner's commands to "Stop" and "Come". I hope the dog's neck really is OK! My Dad says that life wouldn't be worth living if he didn't have a pug to sleep with at night. ... a new heating system ... $$$$$ Posted by greenthumb @ 10:20:2005:03:32 PM CST He's totally unphased, as if it never happened. Me, on the other hand, well, let's say I don't want to check my blood pressue at the moment. Although, when I get angry and mad, I know it gets high, but when I get scared, I'm not sure what happens. It almost feels as if you lose all your blood, like maybe it goes really low. I don't know. That's really sweet that your parents have a Pug. What color is it? Hieronymus was a fawn, and he shed SOOOOoooo much. Then I met a black Pug once that had such a nice, unshedding coat and I decided in the future we would get a black one, so we did (Lucifer). My parents and Stan's Mom are completely petless--their choice. Posted by Ann @ 10:20:2005:03:44 PM CST Xerxes is fawn colored. I think he will be 12 in December. I think more people should be pet-less. (There should be 2 types of people: either no pets or responsible pet owners.) I feel sorry for these dogs (especially) that people get when they're cute little pups, but after a few months the partys over. Then it's out to the back yard for the rest of their lives. Not only do they spend the rest of their lives in lonely misery, they bark night and day, and are probably in terrible health - not that their worthless owner's would notice big chunks of plaque on their teeth, or burrs in their coat, or thorns in their paws or the 500 piles of dog poop in the back yard, since they totally ignore their dogs except to refill the dirty food dish or the slimy water dish ... well, I'm sure you know what you mean. I think more people should be sensible and evaluate their lifestyle before they get a dog and see if its practical. They are expensive and a ton of work and responsibility and need a lot of attention, etc. But if you want to do the work, the rewards are great. (Ever hear this "prayer": 'God help me to be the person my dog thinks I am'?) Obviously you know all this and I'm sure agree with me. Since I walk in a college neighborhood every day, I frequently see students (I'm assuming students - but that's irrelevant) with a darling little puppy, and I think to myself "enjoy it now kid, because in 6 months someone's girlfriend [or whatever] is going to move in and have allergies and they'll get rid of you. Or another roommate will move in who already has 2 dogs and out you'll go." You are DISPOSABLE. That's what pets are to a lot of people. Disposable toys. Thank goodness for the responsible pet owners of the world - which is probably the majority. If your blood pressure is high, go pet a cat - the purring of a cat is more effective than any medication. Posted by greenthumb @ 10:20:2005:04:05 PM CST The neglected animals you described are like the ones in back of us in a rental. Pitbull and Rottweiller. Everyone in the neighborhood is concerned about them. Unfortunately, when the owner does provide food, shelter and water, there's nothing the ASPCA can do. I used to watch "Animal Cops" all the time until the deplorable conditions of some of the animals depressed me too much. It was really sweet; after that incident today, I sat down with Plato on one side and Lucifer Sam on the other, and Persephone came and sat on my lap and put her head on Lucifer, and purred, as if she knew. And this is a cat, although affectionate, NEVER sits on my lap. Pretty perceptive for a cat that sometimes seem really dumb in many other ways. But Stan thinks she's "seen the other side" (she almost died as a kitten with a high fever from an infection when she was spayed) so maybe she has a unique perceptiveness. Posted by Ann @ 10:20:2005:05:02 PM CST Pure love and more effective than a therapist! Posted by greenthumb @ 10:20:2005:05:12 PM CST By Ann @ 09:14 AM CST:10:20:05 ..::Link::.. |
