11:08:2005 Entry: "Ann : Tonight"

Tonight

I was lying in bed, felt like crying myself to sleep. This was the worst Halloween ever, and now some dumbass was outside with those idiot car speakers that sound like bass-driven popcorn poppers. I heard a neighbor's dog bark, several times. I opened my eyes and it seemed like it was light outside behind our black venetian blinds. Despite the idiot car stereo, I heard a noise, like rattling, bumping. It sounded like it was coming from the back of our house. Then, I thought I heard a meow. Of course, I wanted to hear a meow, just like each time I'd see a movement in grey outside, I thought it was Persephone, even though it was just a grey squirrel. I listened again; it was probably just the newt aquarium bubbler that sounded like a meow, yeah, that's all it was. I told Stan anyway, that I heard a sound. "But it's probably nothing," I said. He got up and went to the back room, which we had left open to the outside in case Persephone decided to return. He seemed to take forever returning to bed. When he did, he turned the light on and tossed a small grey cat onto the blanket.

Thank you, Pluto, for returning her.

Words can not express how happy I am. Both Stan and I surely thought we'd lost her this time, as she'd never, ever been gone this long. She's wandering all around the house now, getting to know it again. We showed her to the dogs, and Lucifer Sam especially was full of kisses. Caligula keeps watching her, happy she is home. He was pretty much a basket case today, wandering all around the house looking for her. Usually he just camps out somewhere and sleeps.

What a naughty cat, slipping outside beyond our radar, and then not coming back for a whole day! But I can't be mad, I love her so much.

Glad she's back. Wasn't around yesterday, otherwise I could have tried to comfort you by telling that I lost one of my cats for three weeks once. Then, when I was sure she would never come back, she suddenly did.

That is such good news! I came in to work early just to "check on the cat" - I will vote later! I am not totally surprised that the cat would be gone for over 24 hours, and yet I know that you have to prepare yourself for the worst and then be happily surprised (overjoyed) when they turn up. Did this happen on 10/31 or 11/1? (11/1 is an auspicious day in my life.)

Posted by greenthumb @ 11:01:2005:08:10 AM CST

I guess that happened on 10/31. On the top of this page it says 11/1 but if I hit "back" for the listing of all entries it has 10/31. That throws me. No matter. Now it can be a great Halloween!

Posted by greenthumb @ 11:01:2005:08:18 AM CST

Nico, It's just amazing to me to hear all these stories of cats that are gone for days, weeks, months. Seriously, Stan and I were CERTAIN by the time it was afternoon that she wasn't returning this time.

Greenthumb, that is always my philosophy to look on the down side, because then I prepare myself for the worst, and if the worst doesn't happen, I can be HAPPY. It's so hard to be an optimist because I would think optimists are constantly being disappointed when the outcome is worse than expected. At least pessimists are always prepared.

Yeah, and it was 10/31 (10 pm CST) when she returned to us. This journal script is funky; whenever someone adds a comment or if I rebuild a page, it updates the time to the day of that action, not the day of the initial entry. I struggled with this, but my lack of geekitude got the best of me on this one. And the help forums are absolutely no help...all these little boys yelling at you because "you're using it wrong!" One of my many internet horror stories that I won't get into right now.

Posted by Ann @ 11:01:2005:08:35 AM CST

You have an optimistic attitude about pessimissim.

By "help forums" do you mean a "help desk" that you phone in for support? (I have a friend who worked at an HP help desk - he called them "the phones" - for six years and hated every second of every minute of every hour of every day of that job. It's possible that the people who phoned in picked up on this!)

I imagine that the birds are singing and the sun in shining in Madison today ...

Posted by greenthumb @ 11:01:2005:09:03 AM CST

That would be a horrible job to have, but then again, I hate the act of physically talking other than with people you like that you're having conversations with. (One of the reasons I decided not to pursue becoming a teacher/professor...I tried tutoring someone for a couple hours on how to use and understand Macintosh, and it was hell, yet I digress)

No, actually, it was a help forum on the internet, like a message board where people post problems they are having with a piece of software or in this case, journal script, and those in the know try to help. Or try to frustrate you more.

Posted by Ann @ 11:01:2005:09:10 AM CST

That is so wonderful to hear! Congratulations.

Your stuff looks pretty impressive to me. You must have figured it out by yourself. As for me, thank goodness for our IT guys, or I would be SOL!

Posted by greenthumb @ 11:01:2005:09:19 AM CST

Thanks again, Dawn!

Thanks, greenthumb. I think I do pretty well for an artist with no understanding or background in the technical stuff, but what I've done (script-wise/coding-wise) isn't really kosher by hardcore scripter standards. But I don't have the time or desire to concern myself with them.

I've been in a few situations where I've had to depend on phone support for this and that. Apple is very good with phone support, but they're all professionals. The little boys I was dealing with in the above-mentioned post were helping out of the goodness (that term might be questionable) of their heart. You get what you pay for, and in that case, the script was free.

No matter if the way you do things isn't the way a purist would do things. "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." Who knows, maybe your way is better!
