The Mountain that Came Back to Me

The one drawback of buying a bunch of beautiful pendants and making necklaces with them is that once you sell them, you'll never see them again, except for the digital pictures you've taken of them. Of course the same thing goes for paintings, but that's another story. Last month I sold a jewelry set, and the Jasper pendant had the most unique image of a mountain. It looked like a picture taken with an old camera from the 19th century, the mountain and its shadows were brown, the sky yellow. In front of the mountain was a line of trees and a whitewater river. Floating above the mountain was a small cloud. This past weekend I could almost feel the way it felt in my hand, and as I closed my eyes I could see the image without looking at the photo. I missed that pendant, and I'd never see another one like it. Nature made that image, not a human, and it will never make another one like it, ever again.

The strangest thing happened, however. The man who bought it contacted me last Monday and said it was not what his wife wanted. I was a bit taken aback, as this was the first time this had ever happened. Who could not love that jewelry set? Yet, at the same time it was most amazing. Of all the pendants I've given up, this was the only one I truly missed. Sure, I miss all of them because all of them I use are one-of-a kind due to the nature of the kinds of stones I work with. But this was more like a deep connection. I felt bad that someone else who saw the pendant didn't appreciate the nature-made image of the mountain.

I received the jewelry set in the mail today, and I refunded their money. My mountain came back to me, and I'm going to keep it. It was meant to be mine all along.

I'm very happy that it was sent back to you, and I was afraid that the customer would just forget about it. This way your stone has someone who cares about it.

I remembered that we were having a conversation about all things in the cosmos having consciousness - at least on some level. Consciousness is present even in inanimant things and we are hardly aware if it at that level. The stone came back to you like a pet coming home.

Another stone I do remember missing after I sold it was a Labradorite pendant that flashed purple, which is a really unusual color for Labradorite to flash (blues and golds are pretty common). Now I got this pendant today that flashes pink and orange, as well as blues....makes me wonder if I should keep that one too and not sell it!

So is this mountain up the Poudre? I know we were watching that show on Zion today, but it seems very Poudre Canyonish to me. I do have dreams we're travelling up the Poudre and we reach a very far point around Walden (?) and there's a lot of snow on the ground and we either turn around and go back, or it's that weird reocurring dream where we get out and walk toward a park and the snow starts melting and it turns warm and there's tadpoles in ponds.

This is like a literal story of letting go something you love to see if it comes back. that's pretty cool, but risky! Keep it keep it! (the new stone)

It is really very pretty.

What a wife, doesn't want the gift, if I had such a wife I wouldn't buy her a damn thing. Pearls for pigs.

Nico - I don't think I'd ever buy anyone jewelry unless I was looking at the display case with them and the other person said "I love that!" It's too hard to second guess.

Ann - I assume you went to/past Walden IRL. Where did you go? (where were you going?)

Thanks Dawn!

Nico, I don't think you'd have a wife like that, but if you did, she would be quite economical!

Greenthumb, I can't remember going past Walden, if I did, it was a long time ago.

Re: returning gifts, I think when we're younger, we're more apt to be picky about what we get, but when we get older, we're more apt to politely say, "thank you, it's very prety" even if we know we'll never wear it. I'm not going to 2nd guess my former customer because I have no clue about them, but maybe she really did want something completely different. Maybe she wanted some ticky tacky 10 KT gold plated cubic zirconia fairy pendant on a chain girlie P.O.S. Or maybe she wanted a several thousand dollar sterling silver handcrafted by Native Americans beautiful squash blossom necklace w/old Kingman mine Turquoise. Two extremes, but if she was expecting either, she'd be disappointed, and on one hand I can understand disappointment, especially if maybe that was the *only* gift she was expecting from her husband, yet at the same time I think a mature response would probably be "thank you, it's beautiful (which I truly think it is, although I am biased)" and then put it in the jewelry drawer. I have been the recipient and giver of LOTS of jewelry, much that I would never wear, but accepted graciously nonetheless.

I wouldn't take the return personally.
