The Beets Weren't Bad! (and a DREAM)
So I tried the beet juice in my hair today, and I couldn't really tell that much difference. There might've been a bit of a reddish-purplish sheen in the darker areas, actually, but that might just be my imagination. Reading information on the web about dyeing with beet juice, they recommend doing a rinse (pour over your hair 15 times) and doing this for several weeks or so before any effect is noticed. I didn't do it this way, I just dipped my hair in steaming hot juice for about 5 minutes and let it set for a couple hours. Next time I'll try the Kool Aid conditioner method. So I had a can of beets (I just used the juice from the can for my hair) left over. Not knowing how to prepare them, I thought I'd just improvise with half the can. I put them in a frying pan with some olive oil, paprika, dill, dried lemon peel, garlic and salt and fried them that way. I don't have any measurements and times because it was all improvised and a best judgment kind of thing. They were actually good, and the addition of all those ingredients and spices subdued the sugary quality of beets which I don't like. -- I had a dream that Stan and I had to catch a plane in Denver. We were in Fort Collins, but we were travelling east, toward Denver (dream logic). It was snowing really bad, and I was driving the car like it was a toboggan (sp?). I was going downhill and the window was completely covered with snow and I couldn't see. It was about a quarter to one, and our plane left at one thirty. I told Stan we wouldn't make it in time, but he said not to worry, but if we found ourselves stuck in Denver, we could spend the night there. Well, I see no other option at that point!

Staying in denver wouldn't be bad at all! So you ate the beets, you are so very brave. I honestly haven't had them since I was a kid, and the preparation probably went as far a dumping them out into a bowl and heating them. i've been thinking of trying the coolaid conditioner on a lock of Tessa's hair. I guess we can't use permanent dye until she is way older! This would be very cute.

Beets, boiled in vinegar and sugar is awful. I think that's how my mom fixed them and how most people fix them. And the reason most people hate them. One time on the eastern plains of Colorado, we found a bunch of abanonned sugar beets that had fallen off the beet truck along the highway. So we picked up a stray beet and cut it and tried a little of it raw. It was very sweet and good, and nothing like red beets. Let me know how the kool aid on your daughter's hair turns out! It might take easier to kids hair because it is finer.

You are thinking of "Harvard Beets" - generally people either love them or hate them. I personally know of several people who love them. I like them myself. Beets are very high fiber.

There is a redish sheen to your hair now especially when the light catches it. This flying to Denver dream along with the dream about your parents before - makes me wonder if (for some unforseen reason) we will have to make a trip to Ft. collins?????

Stan, you've been thinking something bad is going to happen to my parents for a couple years now because of a weird dream I have every now and then. And nothing's happened.

Sugar beets grow out here like crazy (actually, farmers are forced to farm them by the banks and they are sold to holly sugar). Maybe that is how we had them, because I remember them being very very bitter. I always thought sugar came from sugar cane only. Silly girl. We have to pick out a color; she has pale blonde hair. This will be fun.
