'My 17 Years as an Unauthorized Jew' (The Good, section 1 part 4: Hermann Goering)

I enjoy going for walks and when I lived with my parents I often walked home from church. On my way I took different routs and one of these directions went past the town library. On sunday when I was around 11 - 12 years old an elderly woman was in front of the library with a box of books for 5 cents each. All I can remember her saying to me was, "Did you find something you like?" I bought 5 books from the tall library woman, and my choices that day were made according to my interest in the book covers.

One of the hard cover books was made out of a pinkish gray fabric material with the image of an elephant and a swastika embossed on the front. After returning home I opened the book, and then it occurred to me that it might have something to do with Nazi Germany. I placed it on my book shelves, and I believe I looked at it only one more time over the next 8 years.

When I came home for the summer after my sophomore year in college I noticed that this book was missing. My father would sometimes give things away to his friends, and I assume the situation must have been the case for this book. In all of the time I had this object I had never discussed it with my parents or anyone. This book had abandoned my possession as I had kept it - in silence.

To the best of my understanding he would have been the book's author. A friend of mine who knows a lot about history told me, from the description of this book that it was likely by H. G.

I've tried to think how it would have ended up in a box of books in a small town. I think that it might have been a something a military person brought home from WWII. If they passed away and their relatives donated his books to the local library, then the they sold the ones they didn't want.

It was one of those strange things that happened by accident.

That is just so wierd. We had to read a diary of some nazi big wig in us history in highschool. boy was that strange!

Posted by Dawn @ 03:15:2006:11:10 AM CST

Can I ask where you went to highschool.

I went all the way through school in Yuma Colorado. It's a small town in eastern Colorado. The people there were good to me, but it was a place in cultural isolation. It's not this way now, but for most of the time I lived there I couldn't even get an FM radio station. There was a lot about clasical, jazz and even lots of Rock that I didn't even know existed until I left town.

The whole world is different now with the web, and it just isn't possible to grow up in a cultural vacuum anymore.

There were very few taboos along what are now known as "politically correct" subjects. We had a lot of really hot arguements in junior high social studies about all kinds of issues about racism. I think we even argued about things like the nazies. I don't think children can do this sort of thing in school now because "politacal correctness" shuts down any kind of genuine diaologue on any difficult subjects.

"Political correctness" is just a fad and eventually people will realize that in order to deal with difficult problems we all have to hear things we don't want to listen to.

Wonder if the "nazi big wig" Dawn refer to was Joseph Goebbels?

Posted by Nico @ 03:16:2006:09:00 AM CST

I don't remember who he was.

I went to Sidney Senior highschool in sidney mt. our teacher was nontraditional. he refused to rely soley on the text book- because it was wrong. i saw this in college. anyway, he had us read material that he provided, we rarely used the book. he was an awesome teacher; he teaches us history for the community college thru the itv lab. i got a b in his class, which was excellent for me in highschool! we did a roleplaying wagon train for a whole unit. it was great. my group got an a. this was 11th grade.

I'll have to ask my friend, Tim about Joseph Goebbels and if he had a diary, but I won't see him until May.

I remember one of the most interesting arguements (discussions) in junior high social studies was whether Yuma had a KKK or not. Our teacher brought a lead coin made by the KKK with "Yuma Chapter" and "1922" printed on it. Interestingly 1922 is my father, Gordon's birth year.

Anyway the class talked back and forth as to whether the KKK was still active in our town. Views went from one extreem to the other and the kids who really knew probably didn't say much.

Yuma is located (on the cultural map) at the far north west end of the "Bible Belt" and there were a few Mexican American families in town, but other wise it was "White". My mother tells me that being a "White" town was a selling point a realestate agent made with my parents when the moved there in 1962.

A lot has changed since then and I wouldn't assume that Yuma is anything like it was back then.

The most hateful and fashist like people I've ever met in my life are acutally liberals living in a multi- culti place like Madison.

I guess my the point I want to make is that it isn't fair to condem an entire location on the map as racist. Everyone every where has to be seen as an individural with their own opinions and most of us have flawed opinions anyway....

Even when I lived in basicly a "white town" people had as many different views as could be imagined - including whether the place they lived had a KKK or not.

"A lot has changed since then and I wouldn't assume that Yuma is anything like it was back then."

Maybe it wouldn't freak me out as much visiting it now, that is, if there was any point in visiting it.

"The most hateful and fashist like people I've ever met in my life are acutally liberals living in a multi- culti place like Madison."

OK, I think what you mean by this is that they're hateful because they're so far-left that they're completely out of touch with other people who do not share their views that they actually appear to be vitriolic in their hatred for these people, but it might just be their overzealous activism? See, I didn't socialize with some of the people you happened to know through Tortured Hill, the initials "TI" come to mind.

Personally for me, the most hateful people I've encountered have been rightwingers. I've not experienced it from the left as much, but I do think a lot of left-wingers are out of touch with what it's like to be a working-class *white* person, as they seem to have this 'tude that all whites are like them...moneyed family, safety net, investment, can afford hybrid autos...I mean, who wouldn't want that? The fact is, the difference between what one would like to have and what one has is vastly different.

Some of the most ignorant people I've seen have been those upper middle class white people on that "Black & White" show that we saw last night. Those were some stooooopid people. They give whites a bad name.

Posted by Ann @ 03:16:2006:08:06 PM CST

Please don't assume I'm giving any leadway or endorcements to the "rightwingers"...

I really like the show about people changing races.

Today I over stepped my customer relations line. One of the customers (a uniform wearing job) was joking with my coworker about how someone had tipped us off that he had to be watched. As if now we were on to him and had to be suspicious that he was always trying to get away with something. My coworker is african american and he was joking with her. I said to him, "now you have to live under suspicion." This played well into his kidding and I should have stopped there. Then I later inserted the statement, "Now you can know how it feels to be a minority." (Because he is going to be watched as though people think he might be up to no good.)

I suppose this was an akward situation being that he was joking around about people being suspicious about him to an african american women and I had to suggest that this might help him understand how minorities feel... me and my big mouth.

Posted by Stan @ 03:16:2006:08:20 PM CST

I really did a poor job of writing the above text.

My african american coworker (not my only one) and I have had lots of conversations about racism, sexism and other difficult subjects. She is a very insightful person and I've only heard her play the race card 2 times in the 9 years that I've known her. She is very tollerant and understanding, so when she says someone is a racist you know they really are one.

My coments were silly, but there is an underling truth - in that racism does have a part in causing minorities to be "under suspicion" much more than anyone ever needs to be.

I hope I'm not being too vague.

Posted by Stan @ 03:17:2006:07:10 PM CST

I know Goebbels had a diary as I have read it, I just wondered if Dawn had read it too (icebreaker: We have both read Goebbels ;) Ok, now I'm being übersilly, but it's relatively early morning here.
