..::Previous entry: "MiniTrip Day 2"::.. ..::Main Index::.. ..::Next entry: "New Corpse"::.. 04:02:2006 Entry: "Ann : MiniTrip Day 3"MiniTrip Day 3Spent the night on the shores of Lake Superior in Washburn, WI. Drove all the way across the UP on Highway 2, where there was much snow, and then down to Green Bay (we watched the snow disappear) and up to Sturgeon Bay, which is where we are now. I was afraid we would not be able to find lodging in Door County, at least not affordable lodging that took dogs, but I was wrong. I am relieved. I was afraid it would be like Bayfield, which is a quaint little Victorian Towne that has no places like Comfort Inn, which is fine, if you travel without animals and are B&B people, which we're not.
8 Comments I don't think I would want to stay in a B&B. Don't people have to *gulp* socialize at those things? Just give me my room key and I'll see you at breakfast! Sounds pretty, tho. Glad you're having a good time! Posted by Dawn @ 03:21:2006:08:07 PM CST LOL! "*gulp* socialize"! That's my sentiments exactly! Did you ever see the movie "Flirting with Disaster" with Ben Stiller, Alan Alda, Lily Tomlin + more? It's a comedy about an adopted guy who tries to find his bioparents. There's a part in the movie where he dreads the thought of going to a B&B...they end up at one and the proprietor tells them "You're not B&B people!" That's us, not B&B people, in fact we quote that line a lot. Not only would they not allow dogs, but the rooms probably smell like mothballs with little notes on everything that say "do not do this." I really hate answering people's questions that would inevitably be posed by the proprietors like "where are you folks from?" Not here, obviously. Posted by Ann @ 03:21:2006:08:30 PM CST I stayed at a B&B in Manitou Springs with Don once and it was nice. The propreitor didn't ask any nosy questions (actually, they were old friends of Don's - otherwise we wouldn't have stayed there - we would have spent another night camping in a pup tent!), there were no notes posted, the room did not smell like moth balls and I enjoyed the 2 people we had breakfast with. A young Air Force cadet with his mother (I think it was Family Weekend at the Academy). (Don has a long history with this particular victorian house, as it used to be part of a Toaist commune before it was a B&B.) Posted by greenthumb @ 03:22:2006:10:07 AM CST I find it tedious and unnecessary to have strangers ask - make conversation kinds of questions - like where are you traveling from.... Posted by Stan @ 03:22:2006:10:17 PM CST Strangers are annoying. esp nosy strangers. ill talk to the occasional stranger at the grocery store or kmart, stuck in line, but not about personal stuff! Ick! Posted by Dawn @ 03:22:2006:10:39 PM CST I've been given the cold shoulder so many times in my life that I have no problem with friendly small talk. Posted by greenthumb @ 03:23:2006:08:26 AM CST One can be friendly while performing customer service duties without having to engage in forced small talk. I'd prefer competency over forced socializing...just do your job, don't pretend to do it. If something about me *authentically* piques their interest, (i.e., they like a certain stone I am wearing, or they notice that they were born in a house on the same street I live on), then it's not forced, it's genuine, that's one thing. But the "where are you folks from/where are you folks travelling to?" routine gets OLD really fast, especially when it is asked every single frickin' time you stop somewhere to buy stuff or get a place to stay. Not on this last trip, but I think on one last year really started to annoy me. (Actually, I had to stop at a post office on this trip in a tiny town on the highway, and because I was mailing something to Sweden, the postmaster asked me if I was Swedish, told me I look Swedish [but I'm not tall!!!] yadda yadda she's Norwegian yadda yadda is Starbucks related to the Coffee yadda yadda. Actually it was rather amusing in its own Fargo-esque way...I didn't mind it, really) And I've been in places with the little notes. And mothball odor. Posted by Ann @ 03:23:2006:09:00 AM CST If you can just laugh these little things off, that is good. These little things are not worth being a distraction from an enjoyable vacation.
