It was decided that the best place for me was to be placed in the class for students with disabilities. (In that era students with disabilities were separated into their own class room.) I was actually content there, because I was clueless to the significance of my classroom change and the implications this had to my future. Later that year we were given an assignment to make a crossword puzzle where one of the letters in 2 words would be used for both of the words. Apparently I misunderstood the assignment and our teachers' only intent for us to be able to identify the same letter in 2 words and arrange one across the other. I returned to class with a crossword puzzle composed of about 10 words and one of them was a 4 syllable word. My teacher immediately said, "You did not do this, who did this for you?" I insisted that I made it myself and I assume it was the case that within a day my parents were called to a meeting with teachers over this puzzle. I still remember the horrible feeling I felt when my teacher refused to believe that the assignment was completed by me.
6 Comments oh lord, having disablilities doesn't mean the child is less intelligent. stupid people. do you recall what came of it? "(In that era students with disabilities were separated into their own class room.) " Don't get me started on the public school system. Posted by Dawn @ 03:22:2006:10:47 PM CST I misunderstood assignments all the time and struggled with teachers' instructions, even though I got good grades. I think it has nothing to do with the intelligence of a kid, but the way they perceive the world. A large majority of the kids in this world are going to perceive instructions and methods uniformly, whereas others perceive them differently. Naturally, the public school system is geared toward the majority, I mean, what else can it do? Actually, struggling with "easy" assignments is something I did a lot, while at the same time I was much better with difficult assignments, which sounds like the case you have here. As you know, Stan, I call this the Olive Green Syndrome from that stupid SRA reading lab color that I was stuck on for the longest time until I finally cheated my way out of it so that I could proceed to the other "harder" colors that I advanced through without much difficulty at all. Posted by Ann @ 03:23:2006:08:46 AM CST It is very sad how the public school system seems to be falling down more and more instead of improving. My public education was fairly good compaired to the things I hear now. Posted by Stan @ 03:23:2006:08:47 AM CST I remember the 'olive green' reading level assignment and I was stuck there for a very long time. In life it seems that we often get stuck in the olive green phase of things again and again. Then once we are past it things begin to fall into place as they should. Posted by Stan @ 03:23:2006:08:50 AM CST Learning disabled people don't test out of 5 math credits for college. Assholes. I wonder how many kids have actually been ruined because they have been misdiagnosed and there's not been a chance for them to be re-evaluated, i.e., with your crossword puzzle with multi-syllabic words that showed them up. How many kids just go along with it, and never get a chance to shine. When we moved from Massachusetts to New York, I wasn't evaluated or anything before they placed me in a class. They just placed me in the average 3rd grade class...standard routine procedure, I guess. Then when reading came along, I spoke up and told them "I already had this (reading) book." They fucked up. So every day when it was time for my reading class, I had to go next door to the other classroom where the more advanced reading students were. They were there because they were all properly placed there because they had gone to 2nd grade there, so they knew where to place them. But I was a wildcard so they had no clue where to put me. They didn't make the mistake again in 4th grade. Posted by Ann @ 03:23:2006:09:10 AM CST Well, what is learning disabled anyway, can't expect a kid to have the same interest in and understanding for everything the school can offer. Most people are not multitalented, but have talents in one or the other direction. Aside from that, school tend to bore kids who has extra good abilities for a subject to death because of the lack of individualism in public schools, so one sit there with some less challenging things to do day after day and in the end one don't give a damn anymore. Aside from that again, good grades doesn't neccessarily equal high intelligence, vice versa. Posted by Nikolas @ 03:28:2006:03:38 AM CST By Stan @ 17:59 PM CST:04:03:06 ..::Link::.. |
