..::Previous entry: "Corporal Clegg"::.. ..::Main Index::.. ..::Next entry: "More Old Pink"::.. 04:02:2006 Entry: "Ann : Madison County"Madison CountyWe lost two members of our cactus family Friday, two that we're really going to miss. We got them at a greenhouse in Janesville several years ago that is no longer in business. I told Stan we should go to Janesville anyway to look at some other greenhouses as well as stop by the Edgerton greenhouse. Amazingly, Stan found the same species of cactus at the Edgerton greenhouse yesterday. He still can't get over that I was so psychic about that. I've done that before with cactii...one dies, I say, "we should go take a look here" and whaddya know, the same species is there. We also decided next weekend we'll go to Adel, Iowa to take a look a Harvey's Greenhouse, where I am pretty sure I've seen the same kind of cactus at the various times we've been there. Harvey's has become a mandatory stop on our way home from Colorado these past few years. It's like a dreamgreenhouse. They have lots of greenhouses, greenhouses for bedding plants, greenhouses for succulents, greenhouses for this and that. Sometimes when it's warm, the succuIent greenhouse, full of furry Stapeliad flowers, stinks like old socks and death. It takes some getting used to, after all, it's not *really* unwashed socks and dead bodies, it's really a floral scent, albeit a stinky floral scent. It's sort of amusing when you're travelling with the carrion flowers tucked away in the back of the van and you take a turn and the wafting scent catches up with you in front. Stan and I will look at eachother with strange expressions, and then smile when we remember it's just the Stapeliads. Adel is a day's drive from Madison. And speaking of Madison, if you take the road south from Adel across the interstate, you'll end up in Madison County, Iowa, the place made famous by the book and movie, "The Bridges of Madison County" (which I have never seen despite it starring Clint Eastwood). We've been there before, once in 2001 when we were headed to Kansas City to meet Stan's half-sister. It was still tornado season, and we decided to take a side trip off the interstate. For the ironic heck of it, we took the road that said "to John Wayne's birthplace." I really can't stand John Wayne, but he's this odd motif in our life. We got married in front of a statue at him in the judge's chambers. Somewhere in stacks of pictures I never sort out is a photo of me standing in front of John Wayne's birthplace in 2001. And probably in some other stacks of photos somewhere else is a picture of me and Stan in front of a bust of John Wayne in 1988. Weird.
5 Comments Thank you for being psychic, and we found lots of other cacti too. Some of them to keep and some I hope to eventually sell when they grow larger. Every time we travel to Colorado we say we need to take a trip to the bridges. I'm glad we're finally getting around to doing it now. Posted by Stan @ 04:02:2006:11:57 AM CST Well I hope the stinky plants are beautiful to look at! I've been to the cactus site here- it is really very nice. I have always planned on getting some, they are so adorable, but I knew we might be moving to texas sometime in the future. I hated just moving my regular house plants from MT to WY and back! I don't want to upset something new, you know? So I guess I'll have to wait untill we get there (which maybe sooner than we thought!) You seem to know what to see when you travel. We passed a lot of great places on our way to Nebraska, but didn't have time to stop. It would be nice to get to sight see when we drive down to Texas, but I doubt it will happen. He's always in such a darn hurry! Posted by Dawn @ 04:03:2006:12:03 AM CST We only know about the covered bridges 'cause we travel that way every fall to go to CO, and because of our misadventure to avoid perceived tornado-like conditions heading down the interstate the time we went to meet Stan's relatives. It's one of those "we'll have to go there/spend more time there some time" but when we go to CO we're never in the position to stop, so we'll make a special trip just to go to the greenhouse and the bridges. The stapeliad flowers (they're a succulent, not a cactus) are gorgeous. There's a picture of some of them here: Yahoo Stapeliad Group. I lurk on that group just to see the gorgeous pictures come to my email sometimes several times a day. Cactus flowers actually don't smell or if they do, they smell like a lily or very faint and pleasant. Stapeliads do smell, some smell like dead carcass (but it's only at the height of their bloom), some like old socks, some don't smell, and some smell sweet and not at all unpleasant. I have a wax plant that bloomed (wax plants, or hoyas, are asclepiads --which is family that includes milkweed, rubber plants, stapeliads and more--) and the flowers smelled like chocolate! Posted by Ann @ 04:03:2006:09:30 AM CST chocolate smelling flowers! Heavenly! Posted by Dawn @ 04:03:2006:11:28 AM CST Stapeliad flowers: Wow! Those are pretty!
