First of all, I'd like to say that I was super pleased that they played as much of Pink Floyd as they did. They *almost* showed their entire set except for that completely moronic and uncalled-for cutaway during CN which is more you can say for any of the other acts. That being said, their coverage was an embarrassment. This was a historical event, surely they could sacrifice a little more of their associated networks to help cover it? What is there, MTV, VH1, VH1Classic, VH1Country, MTVJams, MTVMegajams, MTVMegaHitsJams, MTVRapsSuperMegaHitsJams, ad nauseum. With all their stations they could've devoted one station to one city each. But no, they have the same damn broadcast on both MTV and VH1. Why? I mean if you have cable, you have both stations, (I've not heard of a cable system that carries one and not the other) why the redundancy? I never even got to see the Canadian finale with Neil Young...that was completely overlooked. Why? (I completely missed it on AOL too...guess I was too giddy after Floyd to try and figure out when that was going to happen). And Berlin? I am not a Brian Wilson fan, but admittedly, that should've gotten some airtime. And forget about Roxy Music, no, unless you're Green Day, who they replayed several times, just forget about what was happening in Berlin. This was a truly historical event, not just because of the message it was trying to send in regard to the G8 Summit, but because it made musical history in numbers attendees and global viewers, AND, obviously (and maybe most importantly to many of us), Pink Floyd reunited for it. Did they just think this was a silly little Summerfest with lots rockin' party fun? Sure seems like that's how they presented it. I do remember at one point MTV was actually music television when they started out. When they started to get a little too immature, VH1 took over and started to show much promise by featuring shows like "Behind the Music" and "Legends" which showcased many classic bands. Now they too have gone the lame path as well. There is no where to turn. Who cares about these idiot reality shows...what on earth do they have to do with MUSIC television? For one day, MTVH1 had a chance to prove that even though their regularly scheduled broadcasting is geared toward the Ritalin Ward at the Perpetually Dyfunctional Hospital, it could, for a few hours, veer away from that and rise above and do good, musically speaking, for once. Certainly they could recoup any supposed "lost ad revenue" from the day in exchange for gaining some respect. I never thought I'd be praising AOL for anything, but yes, that was the best comprehensive coverage anywhere. My only beef is that: 1) They didn't provide an actual *schedule* of when what band would be on (or approximation) or at least a running order. I had to find that through some British media site for London, and then for Berlin through someone's blog I found by Googling. I couldn't find a schedule at all anywhere for Canada. 2) I kept having technical problems...Berlin and London kept playing over eachother to create some stuttering Max Headroom annoying collage monster. Then later in the day when I tried to reload (the only way I could get it to give me a new feed of who's up next), it suddenly out of the blue decided it didn't want to support Safari anymore, even though it had been doing Safari just fine for the last few hours. (WTF?) Fortunately, it was cool with Firefox. And even though it said MSIE worked best, they forgot the caveat *for Windows* because it didn't work *at all* on MSIE for Mac. 3) It was too dang small and blurry, which is really not their fault because I had to get the feed that actually worked, and when I tried going to a higher download rate (supposedly my connection has the *potential* of doing 384 kbps, but that's only at 4 am when no one else on my cable block is surfing, I assume) it would have to keep rebuffering which was very annoying. But like I said, that's more my own problem than theirs. So I sort of had to depend on TV because the quality of the image was far superior to internet; it's just too bad that our only option here was the incompetents at MTVH1. From what I've read around the 'net sounds like Europe did a much better job of it all. I wish they would've treated it more like the way the Olympics were covered on cable a few years ago with a different channel covering a different "sport" (in this case city). Instead, continuing the Olympics analogy, it was like one of those terminally perky Katie Couric Prime Time NBC Olympic Highlight Shows with all that sentimentality and just snippets of the most popular American-centric sports like anorectic girl gymnastics and basketball... no archery, no equestrian, nothing that potentially might not sell product to the viewers. What's gotten into me? Posted by Ann on 07/04/05@10:16 PM CST ..::Link::..3 Screamers.I figured it out!A few weeks ago I talked about how it seemed like the Bizarro World because of the Pink Floyd reunion and Apple switching to Intel chips. I mean, these things just weren't supposed to happen. Then a little over a week ago, the Supreme Court made a decision regarding eminent domain in regard to private property seizures, making it possible for big business and developers to take over property of small business and home owners. Siding with "the little guy" in this 5-4 decision were not the more liberal members of the court, but the more *conservative* members (namely, Scalia, Rehnquist and Thomas), the ones I thought would be siding with the interests of big business. I was so outraged by the decision, and confused by my own sudden realization that hey, I might not necessarily be voting for Democrats in the next election, that I was seriously questioning ::::just what the hell is going on in this topsy turvey world, anyway?:::: After watching, and re-watching both the internet broadcasts and the videotape that I thankfully was able to record, the Pink Floyd Live 8 reunion performance, the beautiful, heavenly performance, I realized: I AM DEAD. It's like many theories that are going around about the TV show LOST...the characters are in fact dead, and this island is some sort of purgatory or in-between world where their souls are for the time being. I AM DEAD...because I can tell you one thing, yes, it is snowing in hell. Not that I am there, mind you, but I'm pretty sure I'm dead. It's a surreal world, like in Beetlejuice. I *suspect* Stan is dead too, but I'm not really sure. Maybe he just thinks I'm alive. Maybe when he realizes I truly am dead, I'll start to decay into dust like Geena Davis in Beetlejuice. Or at least in his eyes. Maybe I shouldn't let him read this when he gets home tonight. The thing I can't really figure out is when I actually died. I guess that's one of the mysteries I have yet to figure out while I am in this bardo. Posted by Ann on 07/04/05@08:38 AM CST ..::Link::..7 Screamers.Sunday, July 3, 2005Baah...I can't sleep. More on Pink Floyd.Couldn't sleep last night either...thinking about the upcoming day, plus Stan was snoring. Now, Stan's not snoring, but I'm thinking about the past day. What a dream, I still cannot believe it. There is strange irony/poetry in the fact that the person (Bob Geldof) who played Pink in The Wall (movie) was the one who brokered the reunion. That's almost like something that doesn't happen except in literature, if this was a novel. It does seem like someone wrote a literary script to the band that is Pink Floyd, and we've reached the final chapter, tied up in a very satisfying ending. Maybe it's just a small section in the many volumes that is rock and roll, interspersed with coinciding tales of fans like myself, who simultaneously "give up their end of the bone," as Roger Waters has put it, in my case with my own self or my past (see post to which I refer). Somehow I feel that my reconciliation with my own past ties in very well in a very timely manner with a Floyd reunion, almost so well that it seems again to be very literary, planned, even. I guess that's what I like, not when art represents real life, but when real life represents art. A few silly asides to alleviate the seriousness of this post: --I couldn't help but think of Crazy Joe Devola while watching Sting sing "Every Breath You Take"...tall, blond hair, stalkeresque. --There is an outtake from Pulp Fiction where Mia Wallace is talking to Vince Vega about there being two kinds of guys in the world, Elvis men and Beatles men. If we agreed that Bryan Ferry is an Elvis man, (and probably Eno was a Beatles man) then how do you explain Bryan's love of covering Lennon's "Jealous Guy?" OK, we now return to the regularly scheduled Floydian discussions. Posted by Ann on 07/03/05@02:01 AM CST ..::Link::..Whisper or Scream?By Ann @ 12:40 PM CST:07:07:05 ..::Link::..Whisper or Scream? |
