04:21:2002 Entry: "Lemon"

Lemon

Jane, that is the coolest looking lemon I've ever seen. Hope you're not in too much of a hurry to make lemonade out of it. Maybe you can preserve it--but don't make lemon preserves out of it!

It's sort of weird how we're drawn to these oddities of nature, and find them whimsical and appealing when they're in the form of a plant or something inanimate, but when they're an animal it freaks us out...at least I'm that way. Although I do admit to having found some freak-of-nature dandelions once (they had double stems...it was weird and disturbing) and ran screaming...and I wasn't even a kid when this happened.

Thank you, Ann! The lemon is still sitting in the glass bowl, and just now, it looks as if the "mother lemon" is ready to give birth to the "baby lemon". Well, that was a pleasant imagery... I wonder what I can do to preserve it other than the pictures I've taken of it. I believe in another week or so, the lemon will begin to shrivel up, then it will look like one big puckery mess. Alas.

Maybe if you emerse it in lucite? I've seen this done with flowers, but you'd have to get quite a large quantity of it for a lemon. I don't even know where you'd get lucite....hmmm...or you could just keep it on ice in the freezer until you find another method. Reminds me of when we had hail stones the size of grapefruits (I don't think I'm exaggerating...maybe they were the size of oranges) back in Colorado one year and we saved the hailstones in the freezer forever it seemed.
