04:21:2002 Entry: "Uhhhhh.."

Uhhhhh..

Does anyone know why there is no such html entity for making a schwa? (Is there anyone out there reading this who knows what a schwa is?) I mean with the schwa so popular a vocalization in American culture lately, you'd think they'd have a key combination--like &schwa;--available. I checked my O'Reily "HTML: The Definitive Guide" and my BBEdit HTML Entity floating palette...no schwa. Bummer.

I don't know how it works with Macs but you can obtain a schwa typing "ə"...
It will work only with Unicode fonts such as Arial Unicode and so on...
See? All the tests I had to take about fonetic are useful after all!

Yes, ungeekable (I know who you are, BTW...your ISP is showing ;-P) Ann=Language Geek. I've always had a fascination for language/phonetics, etc. I even took Latin, of all things, in college. I wanted to take Phonetics in grad school as my non-art required credit, but opted for Classical Mythology instead. (Actually, the latter probably came in handier in a practical sort of way).

And I'm really bummed. I thought System 10 would show me a schwa because it's supposed to support unicode, but I still see a "?" where the schwa should be. Actually, I tried it out in BBEdit using a Help Viewer, and I can see a schwa when I use the & # 601 ; combo, but not in MSIE. Well, it's Microsoft, what can I say. OK, let's try Netscape...equally as retarded. What is going on here? Why can't I view a schwa in a System 10 browser? Grrr...

I know you know who I am, all though I'm not a geek I'm not born behind a church yesterday ;o) Maybe you are not a geek, but you sound like one, especially in the last comment!!! & # 601; combo, BBEdit, schwa, System 10.......................... I'm sure that's not latin!
