Walking on Water or Treading on Thin Ice?

Do you ever find a site by someone and you're totally confused by whether you really, really like them, or if they actually scare you a bit? You like them on one level, on the ironic level that most people just don't get. They have a sense of irony and humour, they're obviously very intelligent, and you certainly don't dislike them for the reason many people dislike them or find them offensive, that being what is perceived to be their sacrilegous nature. You see that they have a good understanding of music, both classical and hardcore, but not much in the middle (similar to myself, actually). They're well-read, appreciate good food of the near and far east, yet at the same time there's this underlying current to them that you find a bit frightening. Maybe it's because they support the NRA. Maybe it's because they're seeking a woman of Germanic/Norse heritage (despite my blondeness, neither of which I am--anyway, I'm married and waaaay to old for him and don't live anywhere near DC). Maybe those things, combined with their fascination of German philosophy, remind you of things you fear...the underlayment of Nazi philosophy perhaps. Yet at the same time, they appreciate Nirvana. Go figure.

Who and what site am I talking about? Why Jesus.com of course.

I find it disturbing and it annoys me, no matter if it's nazi or not. I think one could show some respect for religions, even so one don't believe in God or Allah oneself.

It's just disgusting the things people do and say in the name of Jesus. I agree with Nico, makes me ill.

I have a different view on it. Maybe it's just my Onion-esque sense of humor, but the whole Jesus thing doesn't offend me. What I find disturbing is this underlying sense of white supremacy. Does anyone see that? I showed the site to Stan, and told him my feelings on the subject, since he is much more well-versed in philosophy and philosophers than I am, having practically minored in it in college. He told me that "Jesus's" German-based philospher reading endorsements and his German-based classical composer musical endorsements and his endorsment of the NRA and his endorsement of Abortion (note, it's not an endorsement of a woman's right to choose, which is what I am, but an endorsmenet of ABORTION, which almost makes it sound like a mandate in the case of "genetic abominations" as he states) are merely circumstantial and not evidence that he follows the Nazi mindset. He did think, however, that he sounded more skinhead (as per a few of his hardcore musical endorsements) than anything, despite what is presumably his "Jesus-esque" appearance. So I guess what I was seeing was only circumstantial, and not "proof" although I do get a strange feeling about it. And no, I don't look for Nazis under every bed. But this just hit me really strong.

Stan did share my view, however, that it was funny on the immediate-impact level, but we do share a similar sense of humour. And he was equally as disturbed as I was on how "Jesus" worded the Abortion endorsement. I don't know anyone who is a pro-choice advocate who would say they are pro-abortion.

So I'll shut up now.
