Psychograms and Psychicgrams

OK, first the Psychogram. Guestbook signage. It's been so long since I've gotten one of these. I guess she found my site again after being in rehab. This time she's going by "Melody."

Name:   Melody
How did you get here?   blogplates webring
Comments:   Your site doesn't look very professional, you should think about changing the layout before even attempting to offer your low quality unoriginal graphics. Just a little constructive criticism, don't take it too harshly! (winking smiley graphic)

Melody's really got to stop using those non-CSS compliant Version 3 browsers.

Now the Psychicgram. Yesterday, I was paid a visit from a local gallery director. She really liked my work and offered me a choice of time slots in the summer. I'm aiming for July. More details to come. She had gone to the UW Madison as well, began her MFA after Stan got his, and had the same or at least similar set of "turds" (her words!) for profs as we did. It's so wonderful to know that you're not the only one who didn't have a good experience at the UW Art Department. She gave us lots of juicy gossip on "Where are they now." Let's just say it's pretty incredible...Affairs, backstabbing, betrayal, power trips, alcoholism, murder for hire...well, not murder, but *almost.* Pretty amazing. That place was was such a hotbed of nasty politics...it's so nice to see it hasn't changed. I just hope no student was harmed in this latest little passion play for professiorial alpha dominance, as they so liked to use us as their pawns. But I digress. She also happened to mention something about a South Asian conference that was going to be held at the UW, and that her gallery was going to host an art exhibit featuring South Asian art. I couldn't believe my ears when she said this. Remember my dream a few days ago? I told her that I dreamt about this, but I had no idea anything like this was going to take place. She said, "How could you? Nothing has been printed up yet." Whoah. That is extremely weird. Extremely so. Stan was quite non-phased. "You're psychic," he said, "it's not amazing, it's just the way you are." It's still pretty weird to me.

Wish I could've seen what you saw, Lori...sounds intriguing!

Yes, Melody is definitely on drugs. And she doesn't know the difference between constructive criticism and ridiculous Jr. High catty insults. Constructive criticism would be "your link is broken on...", "you have a typo at...", "you have a large horizontal scroll at 1024...". I always love it how these people are always anonymous too. Always gives them so much more credibility, doesn't it?

I don't know why people have to be so damn mean. All the time. To the one or the other. It's even worse on the web. Probably because folks can say whatever they want and still keep their teeth. The web is safe that way for the evil bastards, but then again unsafe for sensitive souls.

You don't have to think of her words twice. Are completely untrue and unjust. You are one of the best professionals online, one of the most creative people I've ever... visited. Words like these only mean jealousy. Nothing more nothing less! Don't even give them credit.

Posted by fenia @ 04/13/2002 06:47 AM CST

I'm not so sure it means jealousy. I think it just means that some folks have a sick need to be mean whenever they get the chance.

Ann,
Please tell me that you know how absolutely absurd this idiot Melody is!! Ok, so I know you MUST know! Let me tell you something that you probably don't realize. Well maybe you do, but I'm saying it anyway.

YOU are an internet ICON. You represent creativity, excellent coding, and general all around coolness to 99.9% of the web! No lie here, and I'm not exaggerating. Seriously Ann, you are innovative and unique. Apparently this causes some people to become bitter and jealous. I just feel sorry for someone like that, because you know they are so wrapped up in their own feelings of inadequacy that they have to lash out at someone they know is superior to them.

I can just hear you now, saying "I'm not superior to anyone!"

You are Ann. You worked hard to learn what you know about coding and design, and this DOES make you superior to idiots like Melody.

The great thing about you is that you have always shared your knowledge. With tutorials, emails, and by allowing people to use your lovely graphics.

In short, you've done so MANY thing Melody can't do, you've really pissed her off!! *lol* How lame she is!!

I know this comment is waaay too long, and I should have emailed it to you, but hey, I hope MELODY sees it! :op

I think Melody needs to get a life.

Anybody see our NicoPico....?

Ann:
When I view your site in IE on the Mac or in Opera on the PC your pic is in the gray area at the top of the page. In IE or Netscape on the PC I only see a gray gradient box. I've always been curious about that.

What pictures is Leann talking about? I've obvious missed something great here since I'm using pc (problematic computer)

Your Nicopico is right here, gOdOfMiScHiEf, just not there

HA! thanks Leann, i KNEW i saw something for s moment there..

Thank you for your kind words, Fenia and Maria.

I'm quite surprised to hear that PC's NS and MSIE can't handle PNG graphics (which is what I used as a transparent line screen over my picture above). I know it doesn't work in NS4.7 (Mac), but that's a small amount of users. According to stats, 92% of my users have png graphic capability. So what that says to me is that PC versions of NS and MSIE don't display them correctly, albeit display them nonetheless. Seems like they interpret a transparent area on a PNG-24 graphic as sort of grey? Dunno. I don't have access to a PC so I can't see for myself. And I'm not going to spend money at Stinko's just to see this personal site which is the only place I used a PNG graphic.

I hate PCs.

So I have changed the graphic to gif, and although it doesn't have the same effect as the original png graphic overlay, it'll have to do. At least hopefully you can see the pictures now.

If all of you users change over to Mac I promise I will put nude pics of Stan and I up instead of just my face.

Of course that could be incentive to stick with PCs...who knows.

I'm still just amazed that those current version major PC broswers can't deal with PNG correctly...simply amazing...hasn't anyone troubleshot that bug for them?

Posted by Ann @ 04/16/2002 09:19 AM CST

Ahh .png! That explains it. Yeah... these PC browsers are still so archaic!

There is a significant difference between South Asia and Southeast Asia, so maybe you're only half psychic ;)

And your website is beautiful, so there. :) I've been admiring your work for almost as long as I've been on-line (I made my first website using your "Environments" something like three or four years ago), and it was probably your site more than any other that inspired me to start designing for myself. Thank you for being so generous with your art. :)

I can remember having a very slow 9600 modem and AOHell way back in the day and I would sit and wait for what seemed like hours for your graphics to load. I'm NOT a very patient person -- your graphics and site are (and have always been) totally amazing. No doubt a reflection of their creator.
