Given a Wide Birth

Up until when Olsen departed for VietNam, the breakdown of us kids went as follows: There was the set of old kids, Olsen and Marla. There were the set of young kids, Melanie and Lamar. And then there was me, the one in the middle. The kids in each set were born about two and a half years apart, but there was about four and a half years between me and both of my sisters. It was isolating in a strange way. I would overhear conversations on the phone or friends of my parents passing by, and it would start out like this:

Night Driving Dream

I was driving home with Stan at night. There was snow on the ground. We were going NE up Willy St. toward our house. As soon as we got to the corner of Atwood and Winnebago, all the lights in the car went out. What was so weird was that it was night and we could see like it was day, but we were worried about making it the rest of the way home without lights. Stan was saying he’d have to call in sick to work because he wouldn’t be able to drive in the morning (he goes to work when it’s still dark) with no lights on the car.

White Centered Coleus, Summer 2011

There is a special place in my heart for these coleus with the creamy centers. It is one of the first coleus I grew from a cutting many, many years ago. If we can’t get one to overwinter, we have to buy one in the spring. This spring we got several of them.

The ones I’ve been finding lately vary a bit from my memory of my first one. These have a creamer/yellower center with a more jagged color border between it and the green. The one I recall was much more pure of a white center, with a much straighter border. I sure wish I could find one like that again. But for now…

More inside, including closeups and other plants similar to it. Continue reading
